Raadi is one of the fastest-growing areas in the vicinity of Tartu, where an ambitious educational campus is planned for 1296 school students and 252 kindergarten children. It is also designed to serve as a regional community center in Tartu Parish. The future educational campus will integrate a basic school, kindergarten, sports hall, music school, and library into a single cohesive entity, complete with outdoor spaces and a stadium. In 2025, the first phase of the campus – the kindergarten building, which will also temporarily house the basic school – was completed following an architectural competition. The striking wooden building is a collaboration between Estonian and Finnish architects. The designers are from the firms Arhitekt 11 and Lundén Architecture Company, with landscape design created by Lundén Architecture Company and TajuRuum. In the architects’ vision, the learning environment is not confined to classroom walls, but extends directly into nature through winter gardens and large glass surfaces. The flexible timber structure allows the building to adapt to changing usage needs over time. The outdoor space serves as a natural extension of the learning environment, where education takes place both indoors and among the ditches, forested areas, and gardening spaces. The schoolyard is designed for all-weather use, featuring numerous shelters for rain protection, alongside a display garden and nature-inspired drainage ditches that complement the play area.
